Graduation marks a time of extreme reflection, that bittersweet period in our lives where we try to hold on to our past while attempting to plan for the future. It is safe to say that every graduation gets harder and harder. Elementary school is by far the easiest to leave… every kid is ready to be “big,” and anxiously anticipates the entrance into a new more mature school system. Middle school graduation is slightly more difficult, but also full of excitement.

At the time we enter high school we think we are as old and mature as we will be the rest of our lives… wrong, so wrong. Then, entering college we think we are REALLY old and REALLY cool. But getting to college and settling in is harder than expected for many. The thrill of being away from home, being able to do whatever you want without asking your parents first is a privilege we have waited for since the first time we got grounded.

But with this independence brings many challenges.  Managing homework, studying, class, partying, and sleep suddenly becomes extremely difficult. College is a period of learning how to live in “moderation.” This applies to all aspects… spending money, eating junk food, partying, etc.

There is a LOT going on in college, yet it is also the time in your life when you are SUPPOSED to decide what you want to do for the next 50 years. Yeah. Right. It seems that once we finally figure out how to survive college, it is time to leave. But, we spent all that time figuring out how to balance partying and studying, we didn’t exactly have time to think about what career path we want to take.  It’s only four years long.

How are we expected to have fun, do well in school, AND figure out our purpose in this world? This is why college graduation is a time of tears (and lots of them). Well, for those extremely well put-together folk, it is a time of excitement for FINALLY being able to get out in the real world and work!

But for the majority, it is a time of shear and utter panic.  We don’t know what we want to do, where we want to live, who we want to be… and the clock is ticking. We are old, or so it seems. It is now that we wish more than anything we could go back to that elementary school graduation and do it all again. Well… in the meantime, while you are researching life coaches to help you through this life crisis, have a party!
